I am a novelist with 27 dogs.I have gotten to this dubious position with absolutely no planning, and at no stage in my life could I have predicted it But here I am.My childhood was relentlessly normal The middle of three brothers, loving parents, a middle class home in Paterson, New Jersey We played sports, studied sporadically laughed around the dinner table, and generally had a good time By comparison, Ozzie and Harriet s clan seemed bizarre.I graduated NYU, then decided to go into the movie business I was stunningly brilliant at a job interview with my uncle, who was President of United Artists, and was immediately hired It set me off on a climb up the executive ladder, culminating in my becoming President of Marketing for Tri Star Pictures The movie landscape is filled with the movies I buried for every Rambo , The Natural and Rocky , there are countless disasters.I did manage to find the time to marry and have two children, both of whom are doing very well, and fortunately neither have inherited my eccentricities.A number of years ago, I left the movie marketing business, to the sustained applause of hundreds of disgruntled producers and directors I decided to try my hand at writing I wrote and sold a bunch of feature films, none of which ever came close to being actually filmed, and then a bunch of TV movies, some of which actually made it to the small screen It s safe to say that their impact on the American cultural scene has been minimal.About fourteen years ago, my wife and I started the Tara Foundation, named in honor of the greatest Golden Retriever the world has ever known We rescued almost 4,000 dogs, many of them Goldens, and found them loving homes Our own home quickly became a sanctuary for those dogs that we rescued that were too old or sickly to be wanted by others They surround me as I write this It s total lunacy, but it works, and they are a happy, safe groupcmillan author davidr

When I received One Dog Night I laid it on the island in my kitchen turned to get a glass of ice from the refrigerator turned back and the book was gone, so I go on the hunt to find out who picked it up in that short period of a time. I look everywhere and the book is not to be found. Seldom do I go in my husband’s home office, he's an attorney and often brings work home and hates to have his train of thought broken. I decide after another run through the house, still nothing to peek in the of [...]

Andy Carpenter seems to be on a streak as he tries to find the truth to a brutal fire which claimed the lives of 26 people in an apartment complex, 6 years ago. The suspect, a former drug addict who found Tara (formerly Hannah) as a young pup, by the side of the road, with a broken leg. Being an addict, he was no longer able to care for Tara and placed her in a shelter, to be adopted later by Andy. Now he is incarcerated for a crime that happened 6 years ago and it is up to Andy to save him. A l [...]

I just love this series. Rosenfelt is able to inject humor into his stories without making the plot or the characters silly, which few mystery authors seem capable of. In this book Defense Attorney Andy Carpenter once again reluctantly decides to take on a case. Noah Galloway, a recovered drug addict, is accused of setting fire to the apartment building where his supplier lived when they cut him off. The chains placed around the doors ensured that 26 people who lived in the building died a horri [...]

This is the first David Rosenfelt book have read although it his 12th; 3 are stand alones and nine feature the reluctant hero of this complicated mystery. I plan to read more. The story features Andy Carpenter, a defense attorney who tries not to deal with clients and his Golden Retriever, Tara. I real life, the author and his wife live with twenty-seven Golden Retrievers. These are the un-adoptable left overs from The Tara Foundation, a rescue organization run by Mr. Rosenfelt and his wife. He g [...]

In most ways, this was as good as the rest of the books, but gets one less star because I can't figure out why the bad guys (view spoiler)[ spent so much time & effort obtaining the company & why they blew it at the end. They had no control over it the entire time they did all the work, so why did they need to control it when they were pulling out? Why not just leave it in the same hands? Did I miss a part where the company was going to start actually using that land? Why the HUGE explos [...]

Attorney Andy Carpenter gets his toughest case yet when he agrees to defend Noah Galloway on charges he murdered 26 people six years ago, a crime Noah has confessed to committing.I love the Andy Carpenter books. Andy’s honest view of himself is refreshing – no posing as a tough guy and no superhero stunts – and his tongue in cheek descriptions are dead on. He’s also more realistic than many fictional lawyers, who have the Perry Mason-eque ability to leap the tallest piles of irrefutable [...]

I always think of these legal mysteries as a nice, light read, akin to a cozy mystery without being cozy. They come with an interested group of ongoing characters (Marcus, OMG, Marcus) and plot lines that keep the reader interested. With this book, I noticed that the complexity of the plot is definitely greater than I've given them credit for before with an intense web of people, politicians, judges and even organized criminals playing a part in the ultimate intrigue. Still loving these books as [...]

I had to concentrate to keep up with this investigation. A really good mystery. I didn't get too stressed with the action, because Andy always wins. There were a few pages where there was a little too much legalese. Still recommending.

David Rosenfelt knows how to write. Once you start a book of his you can't put it down until you finish it. This is his 9th Andy Carpenter book and also has 3 stand-alones. He has the right amount of humor, seriousness, and the ability to pull you into a story. His cast of characters basically people we already know, with the exception of Marcus Clark. If anyone knows someone like Marcus I hope you are really good friends. You don't want to be on Marcus' bad side.Andy Carpenter is a lawyer. But [...]

I was so happy to be back with Andy Carpenter and his girlfriend Laurie in Patterson, NJ. In this book Noah Galloway is sitting in prison. His wife comes to see Andy and tells him that she would like him to represent Noah. Noah feels that since he is guilty, he should just plead guilty and take his punishment. By his hand, 26 people have died due to a fire that he set when he couldn't get the drugs he wanted. At least that is the assumed story. Due to the drugs, Noah was frequently blacked out a [...]

I enjoyed this book very much. I have not read many mysteries, so I have no idea how this compares to others in the genre, but from my limited experience, I think it would hold its own. The style is unlike what I've seen before: most chapters are told in the first-person by the lawyer who is solving the case, but the rest of the chapters--almost half--are in third person, showing the reader different events that certain characters may or may not know. In this way, the different pieces of the mys [...]

Lawyer Andy Carpenter has two great loves in his life – one is his girlfriend and the other is his dog, Tara. And most of the time, Tara comes in first. In this story, Andy sets out to defend and possibly save Tara’s former owner. Noah has been charged with arson and murder, and he confesses that he is guilty. But Noah was so strung out on drugs, he doesn’t remember setting the blaze, though with the evidence the police have, he believes must have killed all those people. Now clean and sob [...]

"One Dog Night" by David Rosenfelt. This is my 4th in the Andy Carpenter series. There are reasons why I enjoy and continue to follow this series. * Andy's love and relationship with Tara and his concern for the welfare of dogs.* Laurie, Andy's significant other, has the same love for Tara and dogs as Andy. * Andy's sarcastic sense of humor throughout adds depth to his character.*lastly the author's endings are never as simple as tying up loose ends. This story focuses on Noah Galloway, Andy's long [...]

I received this book from First Reads. I normally find Whodunit books to be quite redundant, but the voice of this book made it worth reading. There were several times that I was laughing out loud. This is certainly a book I would recommend to everyone; they are good clean books with little swearing and no intense sex scenes. However, they are still flirtatious and exciting. The characters are phenomenal, and it is just so entertaining to read. I will certainly look forward to reading other Andy [...]

Andy Carpenter is a happy curmudgeon. Wealthy enough not to work, he only takes a legal case when he feels compelled to do so. In this case, the defendant is responsible for Andy finding the love of his life - his dog, Tara. Noah, a former drug user, is accused of setting a devastating fatal fire 6 years ago. Noah remembers nothing of the incident, given his drug-induced state, but Andy quickly begins to suspect that Noah is innocent and sets out, with the help of his friends, to prove he's been [...]

Hadn't read a Rosenfelt book in a long time. When I saw the golden retriever on the cover of "One Dog Night", I couldn't resist. The author brings back defense attorney Andy Carpenter to represent a man who has confessed to an arson fire that killed 26 people, though he has no memory of the event, which happened 6 years previously. Carpenter and his love interest/investigator unravel a complex web of blackmail, political ambition and other nefarious acts as they seek to exonerate their client. I [...]

The trial proceeds as a trial should as with this case with a story around it, relating to it, but no information is ever presented because it does not fit the trial procedure. its very frustrating and we feel it along with the protagonist Andy Carpenter.

David Rosenfelt never disappointsI've read everything David Rosenfelt has written. I'm now on my second time through the Andy Carpenter series. If this is the first (in the series) that you will read, I guarantee you'll want to go back to the beginning of the series and read the rest.

A will written book as all of David Rosenfelt are. Andy Carpenter takes a case when learns the defendant save Tara's life as apuppy. Noah is accused of starting a fire that cause the death of 26 innocent people. All the evidence points to it and Noah believes he is guilty. Before long Andy begins to feel Norah might have been framed. I was unable to set this book down I had to finished it.

Very nice to find a new mystery author, especially one with humor, an appreciation for the elderly, and a special love for dogs. I have to contest his understanding of the geography of Galveston. It's impossible to pass the exit to the port and continue to drive 10 miles north. And Galveston is NOT south Texas!

    Peggy
I enjoy this author's self-depracating humor, conversational style of writing, and dog-loving, client-averse lawyer protagonist so much that I can almost overlook the now formulaic storylines and farfetched plot points. He can still make me laugh out loud, so worth the read.

    Andy Plonka
Just on the brink of being too cutesy about the dogs, a reasonable mystery if you are in the mood for not taxing your brain. I like Rosenfelt's nonfiction books better.

A fun and entertaining entry into a really solid, zingy & witty series. My only issue with this one was that the resolution seemed a bit rushed and far fetched, but it was a good ride to get there.

If you like the Andy Carpenter series this one won't disappoint. He is back with sense of humor and (mild) mystery. A great and entertaining read.

Loved this book! Author is funny and a true murder mystery thriller.

Every time I listen to one of these I remember how much I like this series! My rating 4.5.Andy Carpenter is a wealthy lawyer who doesn’t like to work. Although an excellent and winning defense lawyer, he takes cases only when circumstances compel him to. Often those compelling circumstances include a dog. Andy has a rescued golden retriever, Tara, and is co-owner of a dog rescue shelter which is primaryly operated by a friend and former client.Andy is currently in his usual non-working status [...]

Got the large print edition at a used book sale, which made it feel like a very quick read. I'm sure I've missed some of the books in this series, but clearly I've read enough of the early ones to know the backstory of most of the characters, as I didn't come across any spoilers here. That said, if you haven't read any of the other books, there are some references to others here, but with the exception of maybe one or two people, I felt like the allusions were simply to introduce the characters [...]

I'm an unabashed fan of David Rosenfelt's Andy Carpenter series of books. I was first introduced to the Andy Carpenter book series several years ago after hearing that the books take place in the NY/NJ metropolitan area, and correctly assumed I'd enjoy reading the casual descriptions of actual places and towns I'm familiar with. The protagonist, Andy Carpenter, is something of a self-deprecating, smart-@ss north Jersey criminal defense attorney, who's happier in a sports bar than in a court room [...]

    Nancy
It's always a dog that pulls Andy Carpenter into a high profile case. This time the dog is his own beloved Tara. It seems that her original owner, who, out of love and concern, gave her to the dog pound when he could no longer care for her, has been accused of a horrible mass murder. Out of a debt of gratitude for Tara, Andy and his side kicks set off on the trail and the trial. While the court case is proceeding -- not at all in their favor -- Laurie, Marcus, Sam et al are working to untangle a [...]

Noah, the main character in jail and on trial for arson/ murder is a recovered drug addict and a man trying to go in the right direction. Andy takes on his case as Noah was the man who gave him his wonderful Golden Retriever, Tara. There is a lot of conspiracy and underground mining/prospecting, crimes against America, and sub plots in this one. The usual characters- Laurie, Sam , Vince, Pete, and Marcus make up the usual team that supports Andy Capenter's work to defend Noah against terrible od [...]
