I became curious about this book when a crank on our local Patch cited it as evidence that his town was all corrupt and on the take because that's the tradition started by Generoso Pope, the concrete king of NY. The book is actually written by Generoso's grandson and traces the family history through 3 generations. The story goes from Generoso's Italian small-town roots to his monopolizing of the sand and concrete business in Greater NY, leading to his son's building of a media goliath with The [...]

This was a pretty fascinating family history which in many ways, typifies the Italian American experience for a lot of families from southern Italy. The author's grandfather, Generoso Pope certainly had lots of grit and determination, but would he have gotten so far, so fast if he had not been lucky enough to befriend "The Prime Minister of the Underworld," Frank Costello early on? Perhaps not, although he certainly would have been successful. The family saga reads almost like an Italian-American [...]

More than a family history, Mr. Pope has penned something of a splendid panorama of the past one hundred years of immigrant striving and success as seen through one family's eyes. Mr. Pope views all his subjects, whether family or not, through the same factual lens. He manages to do so, however, with insight and compassion. The portrait of Frank Costello, while unblinkingly honest, was nevertheless poignant. Through the arrival of the first Generoso Pope to these shores to the move of the "Natio [...]

The world of the mafia is something I often wonder about. I have wanted to read books about it, but I wasn't sure I would be able to find one that is actually believable. This book was not only believable, but its an honest to goodness true story. Its written by a son about both his father and grandfather's lives. It starts in a little town in Italy, and goes to New York, then finishes in Florida of all places. If you've ever had any kind of desire for a peek into a world involved with the mafia [...]

This book was fantastic, one of the best biographies I've read in a while. The two men are great business success stories. Generoso Pope Sr came to the U.S. from Italy as a teenager with $10 in his pocket but wored his way up to a pillar of the early 1900s New York City community. He courted presidents, dictators and mob chiefs. His son, Gene Pope, started the National Enquirer and changed the media in America as we know it. Their tales, told by the third-generation Pope (Paul David Pope), are v [...]

Loved the first part about how his grandfather came from Italy to New York City in 1905 and truly lived the American dream. The family history and NYC history were fascinating to me. The part about his father buying and running The Enquirer were a little boring although it was interesting to read about how that tabloid came to be and what went on behind the scenes.

A lurid tale full of anti-heroes and larger than life characters. Some stories trail off and abruptly end, the book also freely mixes hearsay with historical facts. There are publishing magnates, dead Elvis, mafiosos, Fascists - the book is only a Zeppelin short of a movie.
