Schaller. The subject of the book is the people, wildlife, and landscape of the vast Chang Tang in northern Tibet. This land (Tibetan for Northern Plain), is one of "vast empty spaces and howling skies," a treeless steppe located above 15,000 feet, "windswept ranges" home to nom [...]

Tibet's Hidden Wilderness: Wildlife & Nomads of the Chang Tang Reserve by George B. Shaller (Harry N. Abrams Inc. 1997) (508.515). This is a book of beautiful photos of Tibet's largest nature preserve. It is filled with photos of the native fauna: yak, chiru (Tibetan antelope), kiang (Tibetan Wild Ass), blue goat, clouded leopard, and brown bear. This book also cleared up for me the true meaning of the word “chorten:” a place for offerings. It is a magical and mystical book. My rating: 7 [...]
