3.5 stars. A skeleton is unearthed from a shallow grave in a churchyard. But this was not an official burial. The victim had been murdered decades ago.Detective Nikki Galena and her team are investigating the brutal slaying of local businesswoman Madeleine Prospeo. She had been a member of an exclusive and secretive drinking club called The Briar Patch. There are no suspects and no one is telling them the truth. The skeleton leads them to the village of Quintin Eaudyke , a troubled place where i [...]

Ever since I read "Their Lost Daughters" earlier this year, I've been a big fan of Joy Ellis. "Buried on the Fens" is the latest in the DI Nikki Galena series, and I loved it just as much. I really enjoy how Ellis can take what seems like a straightforward mystery and creates a twisty, explosive haters that will shock you to your very core. While the novel is in a series, it can be read as a standalone, no problem. Nikki Galena is called to a country church, where an old skeleton has been found, [...]

I would like to thank Netgalley and Joffe Books for a review copy of Buried on the Fens, the seventh novel to feature Lincolnshire based detectives DI Niki Galena and DS Joe Easter.Budget cuts are digging deep at Greenhaugh station so Nikki and the team are helping out DI Gill Mercer on her murder enquiry when they get a call about an unauthorised burial in a churchyard. With nothing more than 30 year old bones to go on the team struggle to identify the victim, never mind the perpetrator but onc [...]

My rating: 5 out of 5 starsThis was my first outing with Nikki Galena and her team and I can honestly say I am gutted that I have been missing out on such a gripping series.  I intend to rectify this at the first opportunity and read the back list. Not having read the earlier books I may have missed out on some of Nikki’s history and character building but it didn’t mar my enjoyment of this book.  I found I was totally gripped from the first page and just kept reading one more chapter until [...]

4 and 1 / 2 starsDI Nikki Galena and her team is busy working the case of Madeline Prospero when they get a call about a body in a graveyard at a local church. Assuming it was a fluke Nikki responds and discovers from the condition of the body that it is not a scheduled burial. Indeed, it is murder. The autopsy shows that he has been buried there for about thirty years. An ornate and engraved wedding band is the only clue to his identity.Meanwhile, they are getting nowhere on the Madeline Prospe [...]

GrippingI got straight into this book. the story really pulls you in. It's actually the first book i have read by this author but had no trouble getting to know old and new characters. If you love crime thrillers then you will love this. I an certainly going to catch up on all the others

Another great read.I always enjoy reading Joy Ellis novels, especially from the Nikka Galena series as they are both exciting and have a great deal of character and location interest for me. This one was no exception, with a great story which really kept me guessing on more or less every new chapter. It was one of those crime novels where you are constantly trying to work out who the murderer could possibly be and just as you think you have worked it out you realise that it couldn’t possibly h [...]

Buried on the Fens. Joy Ellis' Nikki Galena series continues to keep me engrossed. An unofficial body is discovered in a cemetery, and a decades old murder appears to be entwined with a more recent one.Initially, the team believes they are looking at two separate cases, and the recent murder of a well-liked businesswoman must take precedence. Nikki finds the older murder a fascinating curiosity, but as both investigations proceed, connections are established. As usual, Ellis' novel works perfectl [...]

donnasbookblog.wordpress/Full of twists and turns, this is a crime thriller that will keep you turning the pages until the heart-stopping ending. Having read the book I have to fully agree!! I loved Nikki as the main character and the story flowed brilliantly around her. She is a great character and after reading this book I definitely want to read the previous ones!! For me, Joy is now an author to watch! Loved it – 5 stars from me!!!

Buried on the Fens was an AWESOME read!!This was a non-stop read! Could not put it down, until the ever end!! An intreiging story, taking place in a small English town. Two different cases, that abruptly come together. The various Police Officers are working each cases, are really well written characters that just keep you in suspense, thoughtout the book. A can't miss read!! Bravo!! Well done!!

This is the seventh in the Detective Nikki Galena series and the best so far. Plenty of action and, as with he others in the series, an innovative ploline this time a child murderer and a secret lesbian society I love the bacground of the Fens. I don't often give 5 stars but this well deserves it.

Neither good nor bad, but not really good. There are lots of funny and quirky things that add to the whole story/book. The characters, their way of dealing with what happens - divers, fun and well written. Also the whole set-up, where it's happening, that whole still-in-the-closet society and the general question of rural areas and homosexuality also very good.So what's bad? The story. Not believable. Too contrived. Extremely unconvincing when the investigation starts to turn up the truth, far t [...]

DI Nikki Galena rather has her hands full. A body is found in a graveyard but not in the usual way. A woman has been murdered and it turns out that she has been keeping a secret as have a large number of women in the area. Could this be why they are being targeted? Old tales and more secrets amongst the villagers may be the key to one of the crimes but no-one wants to speak out as the fear is still there. This is one of those wonderful, comfortable, easy reads that you can sit with a coffee and [...]

I liked it (3 star). This book was a nice surprise. It was listed in one of those emails you get with free and cheap books. As I recall, it was only 99 cents so I thought, why not! I read the first few pages in the sample and liked the writer's style. The characters were engaging and the story was intriguing. I read it pretty quickly and enjoyed it. I thought I had it figured out, but.SPOILERthe perpetrator was a character that we saw/heard about only peripherally, which I thought was a bit of a [...]

I received an ARC of this from Joffe Books in return for an honest review. A body is found in a cemetery - not an unusual occurrence you might think but this one is in a part of a cemetery that has never been used for burials. DI Nikki Galena and her team try to find out who the victim is - it's a male and he's been there for around thirty years. The Greenborough police are also investigating the brutal murder of a woman but are struggling to find any motive. Then another woman is murdered and s [...]

Buried on the Fens is the story of a skeleton discovered in a makeshift grave in the unused area of a graveyard. The skeleton is that of a man and on examination it is revealed he was murdered some 30-40 years ago. An apparently unrelated present day murder investigation now seems to be somehow connected. D.I Galena and her team discover age old secrets together with new ones during the course of their investigations. There are many twists and turns before the final conclusion is revealed. It he [...]

This opens with a skeleton in a church yard. There is also the death of Madeleine Prospero a business woman, found inside her own home. Having read most of the earlier books in the Nikki Galena series and looking back at my previous reviews: I said of the first book: "I liked the story because it had enough pace to keep me interested. Obviously as this is the first in a series, much of the time is given to establishing the team of detectives. The central characters are well-crafted and this sugg [...]

Remember, one man's simple book-jacket summary may be another man's spoiler. This was one of the more satisfying installments in the career of British police detective-supervisor Nikki Galen.A man missing for decades turns up illicitly buried, also decades ago, on a church's grounds. His death, determined to be murder, turns out to fit in with several recent homicides against gay women and their loved ones.To investigate the old murder, the police descend on a small town whose children were abuse [...]

Good storyIn spite of one curious criticism, this book maintained a tight hold on my attention through to the end and in truth was quiet hard to put down. It is well-textured with full enough characters, the problem is that they, or more specifically the police contingent, are constantly grinning at each other for little or no reason other than presumably to make them more likeable. The many other available facial expressions seldom seemed to see the light of day, with the exception of smiling w [...]

Buried on the Fens is the seventh in the Fens series by Joy Ellis featuring DI Nikki Galena and DS Joseph Easter. I have to admit to being biased as I have been a fan right from the start. Although the novels can be read in isolation, they make more sense if read in order. This is a complex story that eventually links two recent murders with a skeleton unofficially buried in a churchyard many years before. Nikki’s team have to break through a wall of silence to reach the truth. My only criticis [...]

DI Nikki Galena and DS Joseph Easter are called to the burial site of a murdered man, probably killed in 1988. At the same time they're dealing with the murderous of a business woman, who was a member of a secretive group of like minded women, called the Briar Patch. When the daughter of one of the members is murdered, the team slowly come to the conclusion that the 3 murders are connected. But getting people to open up and help is proving extremely difficult. The villagers who knew the man who w [...]

I've quickly become a fan of this series. It has everything I love in a thriller- a wonderful plot with twists you don't see coming, good writing, and great characters with some really interesting back stories. In this book, after an old skeleton is found buried in a place it should not be near an old church, things soon get sticky. It opens up decades old issues from the neighborhood and soon the investigators are looking for long lost relatives, not sure who is involved, their heads spinning. [...]

Joy Ellis never disapointsBuried on the Fens is another great installment in what has proved to be a consistently gripping crime series.DI Nikki Galena and her team have come through many dramatic and thrilling cases to date along with personal and professional challenges that have brought them out the other end a solid and formidable force against Dr me on the Fens.In true Ellis style, the story is thrilling and full of twists. Up against two serious cases running tandem and with budget cuts, s [...]

Complicated creeping through the crimesBuried In The Fans tells the story of a man on whom a series of heinous crimes against children were blamed until the same kind of serious attacks began to occur years after the initial suspect was murdered. The current victims were connected to a special women's group called the Briar Patch, which was an association of powerful business women with less acceptable interpersonal relationships. The killer/abuser had recreated herself and continued her crimes [...]

All hail Galena, and shout for Joy?Once more a 5 star rating for Nikki and Joseph and their team, I really enjoy trying to work out who the culprit is but once more Joy had me baffled to the end. The biggest problem is at about midnight my better half is calling for lights out and I want to carry on reading. I especially liked the piece where Vonnie adopts the homeless dog, only a dog lover could explain the sheer amount of love that these animals give so willingly. With a bit of luck someone in [...]

BURIED ON THE FENS by Joy Ellis. Nicki gets a call there is 1 more body then there suppose to be in church's graveyard, which is in the woods. The skeleton gaping jaw looked as though a scream was the last thing that happened. Leads them to a village, that was trouble in the 70's and 80's. They are also investigating Briar Patch, an elusive club, of a brutal murder, the clients list of names, is surprising . Another good thriller, with enough twists and turns to keep one interested to the end. Th [...]

Read this on Net Galley. Nikki Galena and her team have their work cut out for them again. A body is found in an old cemetery no longer used. It was dumped there 30 years ago. Turns out to be a man thought to have drown at the time. In the mean time they also are having a murder of a present day business woman. She belongs to a secret club called the Briar Club. The more they look the more these two bodies and some others that happen are connected. Something happened 30 years ago that nobody wan [...]

I wish I had read the books before in this series, but nonetheless it was a terrific read. Detective Nicci Galena is trying to stop a killer while at the same time trying to save her personal relationship. I definitely have to read the books before to find out what happened to her and her almost boyfriend. The story twists and turns and your perspective of the happenings will be shifting with it, till finally it finds a satisfying end.*Spoiler* The secret lesbian club (like some lesbian free mas [...]

I am never sure when I try one of the book deals of the day offered by if the book will be worth reading, but we both found this book to be better than expected. We actually liked it enough to buy several more in the series. I like books that take place in other countries (in this case Scotland) and particularly ones with strong female characters and this book met the mark on both accounts. There is an old body found in the old church cemetery, a body that was not supposed to be there. The polic [...]

I loved this book, another great thriller from the pen of Joy Ellis. This book deals with homosexuality in a business context and small village mentality, which have surprising parallels. It’s a very complex story, with more clues than you can shake a stick at. Covering the theme of love and loss and what some people are prepared to do to protect their children, this book is a great read from start to finish.
