Hayes's first novel is perhaps his most ambitious. It has the feel of a movie script, with a prologue, an epilogue, and several viewpoints overlapping one another. The writing is, as always, excellent, but not at this point as profound or exquisite as in his later novels. Set in the aftermath of the liberation of Rome, it is equally sympathetic to both Italians and Americans.
