Michel Foucault was a French philosopher, social theorist and historian of ideas He held a chair at the Coll ge de France with the title History of Systems of Thought, and lectured at the University at Buffalo and the University of California, Berkeley.Foucault is best known for his critical studies of social institutions, most notably psychiatry, medicine, the human sciences and the prison system, as well as for his work on the history of human sexuality His writings on power, knowledge, and discourse have been widely influential in academic circles In the 1960s Foucault was associated with structuralism, a movement from which he distanced himself Foucault also rejected the poststructuralist and postmodernist labels later attributed to him, preferring to classify his thought as a critical history of modernity rooted in Immanuel Kant Foucault s project was particularly influenced by Nietzsche, his genealogy of knowledge being a direct allusion to Nietzsche s genealogy of morality In a late interview he definitively stated I am a Nietzschean Foucault was listed as the most cited scholar in the humanities in 2007 by the ISI Web of Science.

I enjoyed this book on a number of levels, but in the first place (for the first 170 pages in fact) as a gripping murder mystery, and for this alone the book was a terrific read. There is a pretty big clue as to who dunnit in the book’s title and that is not the mystery, The crime itself, as the title reveals, is sufficiently grotesque to ensure we form a very rapid opinion of the need to apprehend the perpetrator. The mystery which arises then is what should we do with this murderer, this par [...]

Picked up a second edition of this book - definitely off the beaten path as far as Foucault is concerned, not one of his 'major' works. I found it to be provocative in that he basically shows 'well, there are justifiable reasons for a child to murder his mother and sister' - then, there are several crappy essays by people who are not as brilliant as Foucault - the question of sexism is kind of emerging at the time of its publication (mid70's) so gender in this book seems to be a growing issue (W [...]

Pierre Riviere was a young man whom for about 170 years ago, in a small village in France, killed his mother, sister and brother. What happened around his trial, including the investigation, inspection, the court procedure and the last sentence, become an example of justice in French juridicial, political and social history. The book is kind of sociologic review of the file, supervised by Michel Foucault.

This book was put together after someone came across the (apparently thick) file on this case in some archives. the editor explains that familicide was remarkably common during this period and a team of historians read and analyzed this case and presented a great deal of it in this book, including Riviere's complete autobiography which includes his explanation of his crime. I was struck by how very similar the medical and legal analysis done by experts in 1835 is to the analysis still being done [...]

I LOVED this book. I have to warn whoever reads this review that the edition I read DIDN'T have the analysis from Foucault so I probably have been spared a lot of bullshit.I understand why some people hate it but my experience has been quite enjoyable. I have anylised it from my medicine-student point of view, reading the opinion that a bunch of white upper-class men from over a century ago have regarding a young man that in my opinion had an easily recognisable unusual mental developement. I ha [...]

A collection of archival documents and author notes, I, Pierre Riviere, having slaughtered my mother, my sister, and my brother, probes Pierre Riviere’s brtual murder of his mother, his eighteen-year-old sister, and his seven-year-old brother in a small Normandy farmhouse on 3 June 1835. Conducted a mere 51 years after the Revolution, the murderer and the trial’s verdict were caught in struggle between judicial power and medical authority. Foucault et al reconstruct this ‘true crime‘ sto [...]

A brilliant study of the struggle of the discourses of medicine, psychiatry and criminal justice for legitimacy and power! Foucault brings to light and problematizes, through a close reading of the memoirs of the subject and the accompanying records of the subject and event, the struggle to establish a narrative through discursive practices. A succinct exegesis of the texts contributes to a sound grasp of his archaeological method in particular but not exclusively.

It's very exhausting. All the details about the personality of the murderer and the reasons he gives to justify the kill are known from almost the beggining. Moreover, Michel Foucault's intent not exactly to vindicate Pierre Rivière but to give a feasible explanation of what was going inside his mind and why the sentence is debatable is quite interesting.

"I'm Pierre Riviere! I went crazy and killed my family! in 100 years, a bunch of pompous stuffed shirts are going to write a book about me! Maybe if you kill your family, pompous stuffed shirts will fall over themselves to write a book about you that's boring and stupid and lame! HOORAY!"

This book is simply astonishing. It's not for the faint of heart, though. A true case of a brutal murder, with the murderer's confession, then analyzed by many modern geniuses. Truly brilliant - it will engrain itself forever on your memory.

An interest document about the integration of criminalistic medical science in judiciary related with the punishment of insane criminals.

excellent book, though violent and cruel

And from this we learn that murderers are not necessarily gifted writers. It's an interesting artifact, but not a great story.
