The late 1960s were a tumultuous time in American history. There were protests for women's rights, civil rights and anti-war demonstrations. Nowhere was the feeling of unrest and unhappiness with the current status quo of American life felt more strongly than on the college campuses. This novel takes place in 1967 - 68 in Chicago and tells the story leading up to the student protest at the Democratic National Convention in 1968.In 1967 when Steve started college at Midway in Chicago, he was just [...]

Note: I was provided with a copy of this book by the author for review.I have mixed feelings about this story. The content was interesting; I learnt a few things and felt I was reading through history, but at the same time I didn't really connect with the characters or their story. I am fully prepared to accept it may have been me so don't let that deter you, there is no denying the effort and creativity Isaacs has gone to to bring this story to life and pack it with so much history.Described as [...]

Riot takes place in the turbulent 1960s. This historical fiction novel paints an accurate picture of the changes sweeping the nation and the passionate confrontations exploding on college campuses. From the anti-war movement to civil and women’s rights, Dr. Charles Isaacs has painstakingly researched details of many conflicts during 1967-1968. His historical fiction lays out in a real-time pace the increasing awareness and building tension among college students that culminated in the October 1 [...]

Dr. Charles S. Isaacs’ second book, Riot: A 1960s Love Story, is a fictional foray into the period of the Vietnam War through the eyes of a young man who, over the course of a harrowing tale of anti-war activism, violence, and love, grows from timid and naïve, in matters of romance and politics, to informed and resolute. Folded into the story of Steve’s growing political and moral consciousness is a tale of first love that has within it the complexity of being an interracial relationship. T [...]

Riot is a meticulously crafted novel, rich with historical details, depicting the unrest and turmoil that had taken place in America, during the 1960's. While U.S. soldiers were fighting in Vietnam, violence, racism, and anti-war demonstrations were plaguing American streets. To dodge the draft, Steve signed up for full-time college. It was while he was attending Midway College in Chicago that two women crossed his path and changed his life. The first person was Emma, an older woman, and radical [...]

SNSBAH Rating: 3.0~~~~~~~~~~Lillian's ★★★ Review~~~~~~~~~~Sometimes you just don't have a choice. The Vietnam War has just began and everyone is divided about the war. Racism is rampant in America and people are treated really badly because of the color of their skin. There is a group of young people that are from all different backgrounds and we follow their journeys and we feel their pain, anger and joy as the fight what they believe in.It was a good story that is well written and makes u [...]

This book is one of those ones that suck you in from the beginning and won't let you go. I couldn't put it down for very long. It's a heart-warming love story that you quickly get caught up in. You could feel the emotion between Steve and Cat . They just stole my heart. Of course, their love comes with some challenges, but together, they learn they can overcome them all.

I love the history and social commentary, and I feel the issues are important. However, I thought the pace was a bit slow and the writing style just wasn't for me.

The Vietnam war hurt & destroyed many people's lives and some of them never recovered what they had lost.
