Weird. The Dead End is a psychological mystery thriller.I found this book at a sidewalk sale for 25 cents. The back cover:The phone rang. She picked it up and a chilling voice said: “You’ve been a bad girl. I’m going to take down your panties and spank you…And them I’m going to kill you….”What can I say? I’m a sucker for spankings and death! Sold!Unfortunately, the only reason I finished this book is because I HAD to find out WHO the stalker psycho was. I suppose that’s the poin [...]

I read this such a long time ago my only vague memories are of a woman in a house with an unfinished pool in the backyard having to deal with a creepy stalker and an absent, douchey husband. Reading other descriptions about this book, I'm surprised I couldn't remember a thing about the unsupportive psychosomatic best friend next door and the fact that the protaganist, Joanne, has two teens living with her and a beloved grandfather in hospital. I guess that speaks to how alone Joanne truly is in [...]

I can only say I remember reading this I think in the late 90's and I liked it enough to keep reading her books!

Only so-so, a lot of build up to an abrupt and anticlimactic ending. Fielding ratcheted up the suspense but fizzled in the end.

I think this book would be what is currently called psychological thriller, which is not my genre. However, if you like that theme, it is a well-written mystery, that misdirects your suspicions until very near the end. You have to decide not only who is stalking the heroine, but whether the threat really exists at all, or if she is reacting to extreme stress.

This is my first by this author and it won't be my last. I like the way she writes.

A book I didn't want to put down.

In ‘The Deep End’, housewife Joanne Hunter’s wonderful life begins falling apart when her husband Paul moves out in order to decide whether he wants to continue being with her. Her best friend and neighbour, Eve is no longer the pillar of support she used to be as she’s now convinced that she’s dying despite myriad trips to various doctors who can’t find anything wrong with her. Plus, her beloved 95-year-old grandfather is dying. Meanwhile, she is receiving calls from a stranger who [...]

Allein in [...]

I was with the heroine of this story from page one when the ringing phone, she won’t answer, hints strongly at what is to come. Joanne is a woman in her mid forties, with a husband who has just left her. Her two teenage daughters are , well, teenage daughters! Her best friend of 30 years, Eve, who lives next door with her Policeman husband, is going crazy (or is she?) To add to this already stressful and upsetting life, a serial killer is on the loose and he is stalking Joanne. We know this is [...]

A woman living separated from her husband, not sure whether she really wants this, a best friend who might not be so good after all and a telephone that won't stop ringing -- these are the main ingredients Fielding uses to create this suspense book. As the calls go on, Joanne is terrified, but nobody believes her. The last person to believe Joanne is her best friend Eve, who lives next door and has her own set of problems it seems. Eve is battling many different types of ailments that the doctor [...]

This completes my reading of ALL Joy Fielding's novels written thus far. Ya-hooo!! I'll now be able to peruse each new one as it arrives out in the stores. Such a nice feeling to be 'caught up'!! LOLQuite a suspenseful novel. I kept thinking I knew for sure who was stalking Joanne Hunter but was completely surprised by the ending. I didn't at all have it figured out. Joanne's lawyer husband, Paul, had walked out on her as he needed "time" to figure out what HE wanted in life. Joanne is alone wit [...]

I got this book entirely by accident, while looking for a new novel by the same name. And guess what? I really enjoyed it. It was not long nor recent but it was very tight from a plot perspective and moved along at a good clip. Fielding's characters were very real. The twp women were mirror opposites but they were tightly written characters. It was almost a ying-yang balance of personality between the two. The plot was tight, real tight, and at times quite scary, I was almost hesitant to read it [...]

The Deep End is an incredibly eerie and intense story. Joanne, the main character, is having bad news thrown at her left and right, but to make matters worse, a pervy creep is repeatedly calling her. She assumes that it's an obscene prank, but is there something more sinister at work?I usually don't write reviews that are very long because I read a lot and I'm working much of the time, but I really enjoyed this little psychological thriller so I felt like it deserved it. This book was very well- [...]

3 STARS"Joanne Hunter's secure suburban world is falling apart. Her husband's desertion after twenty years of marriage leaves her stunned. Eve, her best friend, is strangely distant. After a couple of starts and stops, I was finally able to get into this book. There was a lot of drama, and some of it inspired an eye roll or two: the cliché husband, the antics of the teenage daughters, the lusty tennis instructor, and top it off with the crank phone calls. I did not care for the main character at first; mostly because of her passive spinelessness. I did enjoy how Fielding built the suspense as she built Joanne's character to the point where Joanne was strong enough to stop l [...]

Da passiert ja niddamolnix! NIX!

This was another book I read when I got back into my reading groove, which I found to be an enjoyable suspenseful read.Joanne Hunter's husband just ups and goes after twenty years of marriage shattering her world. In fact everyone Joanne ever counted on seem to be abandoning her. Eve, her best friend, her grandfather is very ill in a nursing home. Suddenly she starts receiving mysterious calls from a stranger. It will keep you hooked to learn his identity.

    Kristilyn (Reading In Winter)
[from my blog 'Reading in Winter']Could this be the shortest review ever? This was such a horrible, predictable book! It took forever to read - it was one of those books where I could put it down, read 4 other books, and come back knowing exactly what was going on. It was that slow. I'm not sure if all of Fielding's books are like this, but this really made me not want to attempt another one!

As I expected Joy Fielding has delivered another epic wife, mother, friend finds herself again and is stronger and more independent for it. Loved the heroin and loved her girlfriend Eve of thirty years, I really hated her selfish midlife cliche husband, however in the end the Joanne understands she can survive on her own without her estranged husband. Very suspenseful, thriller, it was a riveting book, kept me engaged from start to finish. Recommend to read if you have the chance.

    Gerry
Deserted by her husband of twenty years and increasingly distanced from her best friend, Joanne is haunted by threatening phone calls that leave her fearing for her life. Red herrings and unexpected twists right to the end leave the too-pat conclusion still unsatisfying.

    Tawana Farley
It took awhile for me to get into it, and the final moment where she meets her stalker at the end was not what I anticipated! I appreciate the build up, but not the final moment. Either way, it was an okay read.

    Laurie
A woman finds her life and her marriage are falling apart. Her best friend since childhood is changing after suffering a miscarriage and since her husband of 20 years moves out, she has been getting threatening phone calls. A good read.

    Cheryl Harflett
This was a great story up until the last couple chapters. It was one of those books that just ended "suddenly" when it could have been so much more climactic (and really should have been based on the rest of the book).

The Deep End, Joy Fielding, RDC-M #3, 1986, 9/1993. A woman's world is falling apart, her marriage is disintigrating, her best friend is distant, her grandfather's ill and in a nursing home. Very good story.

Newly separated woman begins to see the people in her life from a different viewpoint. She is being tormented and threatened she will be killed and nobody believes her. She becomes stronger as she deals with unexpected turmoil and the attack by the killer.

    Camilla
Psychological mysterygood story, but a tad overdone. Not as gripping as the first one of hers I read that I couldn't put down. I do like her style just like to become more engaged to the story than I was this time.
