4.5 starsI enjoyed this author’s writing style before with Homespun (released 2013) and a couple of short stories in two different anthologies. So when I saw this title being listed on DSP’s coming soon page, I immediately decided to pre-order it. I didn’t even pay attention to the blurb, I just knew I wanted to try her first novel-length story.I hope I’m not dismissing the merit of this book and reducing the interest for readers when I say that Held for Ransom is not your traditional M/ [...]

I liked the small town setting and the small town lives. Ms. Wier did an excellent job making it real for me. I liked the characters. I was really routing for DJ but couldn't figure out a way for him to have a realistic HEA. I liked the way the sex scenes were handled. Finally an MC who clearly and simply states that he doesn't want what has become a m/m must have. But the MC's just didn't have enough page time together for me. I found some of the book to drag when they were apart, each doing th [...]

3.5 star review by DanI’ll admit it, the cover convinced me to read this book. I’m a motorcycle guy, who also happens to be gay, so if you throw a motorcycle and a couple guys on the cover I’m sold!Osmar, Illinois is one of those one stop-light towns like the towns where so many of us grew up in the United States. A notoriously bad place to be a young gay man. DJ grew up in Osmar and is related to the local “questionable” family who lives in the local trailer park. One of his cousins i [...]

Ohhh, this was a lot of fun! :)It's a light read, fast-paced, well written and the mystery around Ransom was engaging and had me wondering and guessing for a good deal of the book. Both guys are very likable; I had a weak spot especially for our mysterious Ransom. *sigh*There were a few aspects that I found refreshing and added to the book's charm. Also, DJ's family is pretty intriguing and fun, which made the few secondary characters very enjoyable. The ending was heart-warming, with a promise f [...]

I decided to try again with some of the books which I've started reading but never finished so I picked up this one again. I've no idea what the problem was the first time as I flew through this book this time. Ransom started off as a bit of an enigma but he was soon squeezing his way into my heart. The more I learnt about him, though, the farther away the possibility of a HEA with DJ seemed to get. DJ seemed to be pretty much stuck in the water before he met Ransom. He had recently lost his mot [...]

3.5 starsThis one is certainly different from other books in this genre. It's excellently written. It's light, there's no angst, no drama, none of the usual m/m romance tropes. It feels natural and real. The main characters are well-developed and each has a distinct personality. The ending was great. It actually took me by surprise, in a good way. But, unfortunately, this book dragged a bit, and I struggled to keep interested. At times it was downright boring, especially in the middle. And I wish [...]

This is not your typical m/m romance, and for the most part that is a good thing in this case. There are definitely two cute guys and a romance, don't get me wrong. But there are many other interesting people and events, too--kind of like real life. Also part of the plot is built around a Christmas carnival, but really the book could be set almost at any time in the winter months, so don't let the "seasonal" theme keep you from reading it at any other time of the year. The writing flows well, the [...]

A fast-paced, light read. DJ Lanning lives in a tiny, quiet town in rural Illinois, where the only job he can scrounge up is part-time in the local gas station and where his romantic prospects as a gay man are slim. Then, while helping to set up for the town's annual winter carnival, he runs into a mysterious stranger called Ransom, who may just be the kind of guy DJ's been looking for. Wier's scene-setting was great—I really bought Osmar as a fading Midwestern small town, populated with some [...]

2.5 StarsI'm a small town girl born and raised. Moved away from home because I needed to spread my wings. Even when I lived in my hometown I wasn't dumber than a box of rocks. DJ and all his friends? COME ON! Do they live in the real world? For DJ being in charge of the carnival he sure didn't do a lot of work on it. He sure did ignore a lot of people. Ransom. Yeah, you were a mystery, but you were dumb, too. (view spoiler)[Why would you carry ALL the money at once? Why not put some of it in a s [...]

I, however, can not point to why I wanted to read this book. Heck, I haven't even read any reviews. Something about it just said, "read me." Find the whole review at prismbookalliance/?pos

A Holiday 'Meet-cute' with an interesting cast of small town "Family" who were there to offer many opinions on the choices of the main couple. I enjoyed the holiday setting and the descriptions of the town. I liked the main romantic couple. I would have liked to have seen them together more and some more development, as they ended up separated for a portion of the book. A pleasant and quick read, with minimal angst, perfect for reading in front of a fire with hot chocolate.

My week 1 book for Joyfully Jay reading challenge. Quite enjoyable.

3.5, rounded upWhile I wasn't in love with the story, I did love the characters and the writing. -I wish the MC's had spent more time together. -The ending left me with a lot of questions.
