Miriam Schlein Is a well-known author, some of his books are a fascination for readers like in the When Will The World Be Mine? book, this is one of the most wanted Miriam Schlein author readers around the world.

It is interesting to see how much longer children's attention spans used to be as this is a fairly wordy book, although the story is simple enough for pre-school children to understand; but will they sit still long enough to hear it through to the end? The illustrations in this 1954 Caldecott Honor book use very dull, muted greens and reds; not nearly as colorful as more recent Caldecott books.

This is another Caldecott Honor book that doesn't quite meet my idea of "distinguished American picture book for children." It is a good book, but the illustrations are not great. There are some cute drawings, and the story itself is charming, but it is definitely one of the least impressive honor books.

When Will This Book Be Over?Super wordy book. The illustrations look like something I could learn to do if I spent maybe a month preparing.A baby rabbit is born. The mom is like, “You can have everything. Everything is yours.” And then he goes to a stream and says, “How is the stream mine if it runs away? I don't understand this.” And she's like, “But it has to run. Otherwise it wouldn't be a stream.” “Well, how is it mine?” “Well, it runs to you, and you can drink it if you ne [...]

    • 1954 Caldecott Honor Book •Enjoyable book, but I’m not sure it’s Caldecott worthy. The art is ok, but not near the level of most Caldecott books. The story is simple enough, but extremely wordy, although I think the older childrens books get, the longer the text becomes. But it’s awfully wordy for such a simple story. Materials used: lithographyTypeface used: unlisted

The snowshoe rabbit is the most curious character you could ever imagine. While reading the text, you become intrigued with the surroundings snowshoe rabbit is wanting to have for himself. The text is descriptive enough for your own imagination, while the illustrations are simple and easy to understand. The snowshoe rabbit is dependent on his mother for all of his answers to his infinite amount of questions. After snowshoe realizes the senses, i.e. eyes, mouth, nose, ears, that he must grow into [...]

This book about a young rabbit anxious to grow up and take on the world makes an interesting allegory for childhood. Kids ask their parents many of the same questions the rabbit asks of his mother, and probably receive similar answers. I especially like the mother’s statement about the role of various pieces of nature: “The stream must run as the field must stand still, the stars must fade when the sun comes up, and only the bird can fly over the hill.” This is such a beautiful and poetic [...]

Even though the story was a little long and had to be broken into two days, I really enjoyed this tale of a little snowshoe rabbit growing up and asking questions about the world around him. I absolutely loved the illustrations done by Jean Charlot, who is known for doing Mexican murals though he did quite a few children's books as well. This book he did with crayon on acetate and only used two colors. To learn more about this technique, check out this paper from the University of Hawaii (about [...]

1954 Caldecott Honor Favorite illustration: The bunny hopping away over the hill in the snowFavorite line: "Oh, is this a stream that tinkles and bubbles that sings to me as it runs?"Kid-appeal: I loved the nature-filled story, and the fact that there are no threatening predators for the bunny.

The green and reddish-brown pencil drawings provide simple if somewhat redundant depiction of the story of a snowshoe rabbit growing up. The highlight is experiencing the natural world through the eyes and ears of the bunny. 2.4 stars.

    A sweet story.
