"Go for it" we tell our young people. "You can do anything you want to do; be anything you want to be." Sounds good, but sometimes they are skeptical.Oveta Culp Hobby: Colonel, Cabinet Member, Philanthropist is a good book to hand to a questioning middle-schooler. Some people do seem to do it all, and Hobby, as author Debra Winegarten demonstrates, is one of them. The apt title describes only three of Oveta Culp Hobby's multiple accomplishments. The daughter of a Texas state legislator, the young [...]

The biography of Oveta Culp Hobby is a well-researched and simply expressed story appropriate for middle and high school students. Students looking for a modern story of a woman successful in public life can head to this book immediately. Hobby's work in the WACs is pretty well-known, but her presence in the story of the polio vaccine was a new discovery. Readers do come to know the public side of this public woman, but less of her private side because she did not reveal it to others. The weakne [...]

This was a quick read for an adult. I sure would like to see this book as a Texas school recommended book, if it isn't already. The author really did such a superb job. It is written so clearly for middle-school kids to be able to understand, but I learned a lot! I grew up in Houston, TX and only knew the Hobby name because of the airport. I didn't even realize she was on the masthead of the Houston Post (the best newspaper in Houston).Highly recommend for middle-grade kids.

I was given this book for a Texas-centric book club and enjoyed it very much. Written for Middle schoolers, it is an easy read, but I was left wanting to know more about this very impressive Texan. I would like to have known her and wish that this state would produce more like her. In fact, were she still alive (she died in 1995) I would vote for her for President of this country without hesitation.
