    Am absolutely the wrong audience for this sort of work. Winkler is relentlessly erudite (no problem with that) but he is also endlessly playful (grr) and unfailingly fussy (ugh). Rather than simply offering a straightforward explanation of his reading of Apuleius, founded on the key insight that the teller of the tale seems curiously disjunct from the person in the tale though they are in fact the same, Winkler is the kind of critic who wants to 'perform' his reading.     I was really, really glad when I finally finished this reading. While some of the more sordid bits were mildly entertaining, the stories just went on for too long. And while I realize that Apuleius invented the form of the novel, and that many of the stories herein were prototypes for stories found in the literature of today, I found the execution clumsy and just simply boring. But then, maybe I'm the ass.
