The author was not a particularly fond of Hemingway the man but was intrigued by the man’s writings and his relationship with Africa. Following Hemingway’s footsteps took Ondaatje through East Africa (Kenya and Tanganyika). Although he found many changes to the cities, transportation modes, and people, much stayed the same. Most of the photographs scattered throughout are of Hemingway and his friends. Newer pictures show landscape and people as Ondaatje saw them. He examined how Hemingway’ [...]

The body of works of literature that are about Hemingway I have always enjoyed reading as much or more than the books by Ernest Hemingway. This one I just kept reading a chapter or so every day until I finished.A few of Hemingway's works are difficult without background or study as E.H. writes in a style that appears simplistic, however it is not and Hemingway in Africa explores the 'undercurrents' of this in his writing about being on Safari. The strongest part of this work is the literary cont [...]

Hemingway went on his second safari with his fourth wife, Mary, twenty years after his first safari. His son was living in Tanganyika at the time, and the Hemingways went to visit and do some hunting. Ondaatje retraces Hemingway's journey, but rather than a description of the trip, although that is there, this book is really more literary analysis than anything else, with Ondaatje parsing Hemingway's novels and short stories to find the direct and indirect influences of his two safaris in East A [...]

This book is not only about Hemingway in Africa, but a piece of art in biography form. The photos throughout the book are stunning, engaging and tell their own story of life in East Africa. I spent a summer in Uganda and Kenya, walked on some of the same places mentioned in the bookrprisingly, I have a photo of myself taken at Murchison Falls on the Nile River, unknowing at the time that Hemingway's plane crashed there. The life Hemingway lived on his first trip to Africa was so different from h [...]

This book will likely appeal more to Hemingway fans. I am one of them. The author covers the same ground, literally, that Hemingway travelled in Africa. The writing and the photography are beautiful. The author knows Africa and is able to show the reader the lure of Africa for a person like Hemingway. This is not a hunting book, nor is it a safari book. Also, I have encountered people who have mistaken this author, Christopher, for his younger brother, Michael (of English Patient fame). Beware. But [...]
