It would seem that the Civil War is one of those moments in our history that has engendered a number of films, documentaries, and books--maybe more than any other event in our history. And Ms. Moore has now added a very touching look at this moment in our history, and it is certainly well worth the read. Her powers of description and viewing the Civil War in a little different light bring the sights and sounds of this horrendous battle right into our present-day consciousness. I had never consid [...]

When Joe is brought to Beth’s attention, she nurses him back to health under her grandma’s watchful eye. Joe seems to get better, then the fever sets in, and he is delirious most of the time. For a good 50% of the book, this is the plot that dragged on and repeated itself immensely.Read the rest of the review here: wordswithbooks/2013/06/11/

In the heat of the Civil War, Beth Bumgartner is called into action in a way she never dreamed. Her grandmother has asked her to join her as a nurse helping the wounded even though their very lives may be at risk as well as grandmother's home. Now that the Rebel soldiers have made their way into Harper's Ferry, many in the town have taken what little personal affects they possess and have attempted to make their way to safe places to hide until the war is over and they hope they still have a hom [...]

A journey into the reality that came with the Civil War. We experience it with our own eyes and ears with the help of this Ms Moore.Death and tragic loss of human life is everywhere. We see all of this though the eyes of Beth Bumgartner and her Grandmother Gerta. They have been called upon to nurse the wounded Confederate soldiers. We feel the shells shaking the house and breaking the windows. We smell the blood and unwashed bodies, and we see the pile of legs and arms the surgeon has cut off, a [...]

More like 3.5 stars. This was a sweet love story set during the Civil War. I tend to be a sucker for war love stories. This one had a bit more gore than a like to read about, though. I have a weak stomach. All the stuff about stench and lice was realistic I'm sure, butew. But I did like the way the characters interacted. I appreciated how loyal people were when they had seen sacrifice for people on the either side of the war. Poor Joe was sick for what seemed like forever. I thought it was sweet [...]

A Heartbeat Away was set during the Civil War. The author did such a great job with her descriptions, that it made you feel as though you had actually been there yourself. There was a little romance in the story, but it seemed to take a back seat to the war efforts until the end of the book. Even though, for a Christian book, there wasn't much depth, I did still enjoy it.

This was very difficult to follow and even tougher to believe. I finished it, but only because I'm bed-ridden and desperate for reading materials. It took me more than a year after starting it to become desperate enough to go back and finish it.

I got lost somewhere in the middle of this book and wasn't really very interested in finding my way back. The concept seemed like a good one at the beginning, but the more I read, the more frustrated I got with the book and the author. Very disappointed.

This is the first book I’ve read by this author. My mother is a quilter and I was intrigued by the idea of quilting and storytelling. The Civil War has always been an interest in mine—it was a very sad time in our history where brother fought against brother. I can't imagine how heartbreaking this was for the families involved. The fascinating thing to me is that there are documented stories of “enemies” that fought in the Civil War becoming close friends. How could two people that fough [...]

I like historical romance, but I've never actually had the chance to read one from the Civil War. So I was interested to see how this one would play out. I also wanted to see how a quilt could be the focus of a war story. I was pretty happy with it. Beth is a pretty good character. Like all people she has her strengths and her weaknesses. She wants to be a strong woman - physically and mentally, but in the face of so much death from the war she has to admit her weaknesses. I like when characters [...]

Title: A Heartbeat Away (Quilts of Love Series)Author: S. Dionne MoorePages: 240Year: 2013Publisher: Abingdon Press Being a Civil War enthusiast for me means learning about the time, reading stories in that time frame, both fiction as well as nonfiction. There are many theories about different parts of that era. The amount of life lost is something that still staggers my heart and mind. When I read about this timeframe, I see past the battles; I see quilts made that held messages of a variety I [...]

Beth has always wanted to be a nurse. Unfortunately, the US Civil War has provided the perfect opportunity to hone her skills. A group of runaway slaves brings a man who is in desperate need of her care, but Beth is hesitant as she is a loyal Unionist. However, Beth works on Joe at her grandmother's urging, and she finds herself growing closer to Joe as she tends him. Beth and Joe are both hiding things though, and this could break the bond that they are forming. Surrounding all this is a quilt [...]

Beth Bumgartner desires to be a nurse, so she moves in with her grandmother and assists in caring for wounded soldiers in the height of battle almost at their front door. Nursing means caring for not only the Union soldiers but also the Confederates. This is difficult for Beth and can't help but feel bitterness toward her enemy of the south. But there is their first patient an injured soldier which happens to be a Confederate yet she feels some tenderness towards this man even though she despise [...]

"The darkness would fade as we journeyed toward the light."In a time when state fought against state, man against man, white against black; hope seemed especially bleak. This book, although historical fiction, can be applied to today.Beth, not exactly crippled, but not exactly right, knows what rejection feels like. Loss. Pain. Suffering. But what will it take to bring her back to the God who still loves her; the one she's turned her back on?I enjoyed the themes running throughout this book. The [...]

A Heartbeat Away is an intense look at the emotions of the Civil War from an angle rarely considered: those caught up in the blood of battle as civilians who want to help the wounded. Never have I read a fictional account that dwelt on the hope that comes from the ashes of war like this one does. The semi-graphic accounts will make your heart dip into your stomach just as your fingers grasp the straws of hope that Joe points out to Beth.Beth learns amazing spiritual truths from her grandmother a [...]

"A Heartbeat Away" is a part of the "Quilts of Love" series, a series that features a romantic and inspirational story that revolves around a quilt. With this story, the pattern featured is the antique Goose Chase, and it is so appropriate to the tale. As Beth and Joe struggle to come to terms with their fledgling relationship in the midst of the raging Civil War, she a Northern sympathizer and he a Rebel soldier, their hearts and minds are in a "chase" around to finding the true love they are me [...]

A Heartbeat Away is a fresh new look at the Civil War. Heart touching and beautiful. I loved the role the quilt played in the story, and how it had more than one message. The colors came alive and the messages unfolded.S. Dionne Moore is a new author to me, and one that quickly found her way into my list of loved authors. She uses the Deep Point of View to bring the reader into the story and with vivid imagery you see not only the awful ravages of war on the country, but also on the people. Alth [...]

Joe is brought by slaves to Elizabeth and Gretas' house and the grandmother sews him up but he needs rest and they fear the troops will find him.Loved learning about healing and the use of honey and cornstarch.Found a bond right off the first few pages while she's drinking tea a splash of hot water and cinnamon heated up the tea-I drink tea all year round also.Joe starts to recover and others are brought in for her to h [...]

This book sounded like it was going to be one I would love, it's set during the Civil War and is about a romance between people from opposite sides, but I just couldn't connect with it.I loved the heroine grandmother, she was such a great character! The way she took care of everyone she could, no matter what color uniform they wore, was wonderful. I loved how she explained why she was doing it to Elizabeth. There is a lot of repetition, which is always boring to me. Though the romance was sweet, [...]

I liked the general plot of the book - the Civil War, a young woman and her grandmother nursing injured soldiers from the other side, a North-South romance, a quilt to symbolize hope in the midst of darkness, the main character's spiritual journey from despair to faith. But I did not think the writing was great. I liked the grandmother and Joe but I thought Beth was extremely annoying. All around her the country is divided and engaged in a violent war, soldiers are dying and having limbs amputat [...]

You will see how Beth begins to realize that there is a story behind the blocks and as her time with Joe progresses they both discover the hidden meaning to the quilt's blocks.Ms. Moore writes about the true tragedy of the Civil War that was fought to our great nation. She holds nothing back in her way of writing about this sad time in our country. I felt like I was with Beth in her struggles so much that I could almost smell and see everything around her happening in this war. I could hear the [...]

Won it. Read it. Loved it.I was lucky enough to have received this book in a giveaway. I enjoyed it greatly from beginning to end. The author did an incredible job of depicting the Civil War and the effects that it had on people; not just soldiers, but also civilians. The descriptions of the physical damage they endured were enough to make me cringe and grit my teeth. Amongst the Civil War story there was also a love story that took place between two people of opposing sides. It showed the power [...]

Excellent historical details. A story of forgiveness and love against the swirling heated passions of hatred in a world consumed by war. Beth feels unlovable due to a crippling injury. Joe struggles against the haunting nightmares of the violence done to him and by him in the name of war. Moore recreates with exquisite detail the cultural gulf that divided Americans inflamed by a brutal war over a century ago. Beth and Joe's journey toward spiritual and physical healing—depicted in the symboli [...]

I got a free copy of this book from Giveaways/ First Reads. It was a personalized autograph copy too, which is exciting.I was not wowed by this book like I was hoping to be since all the reviews were pretty positive. I think this book had too many side stories/back stories, most of which were briefly touched on and dropped. The barn accident, jilted loves, best friend betrayals, neighbors, dead family members, some sort of friendly fire conspiracy which was not explained, all these different ch [...]
