Reviewed for THC ReviewsUntil picking up A Socialite Scorned, I had never read a true crime novel before. I occasionally enjoy a good mystery, and since this book is a real-life mystery, it turned out to be an interesting read. It is the story of wealthy businessman, Gary Triano, who was murdered in a pipe-bomb explosion outside a Tuscon country club in 1996. Oddly enough, even though I lived in Arizona at the time and the story made national news, I don't really recall the case (I suppose havin [...]

In this true crime drama set in Tucson, AZ criminal defense attorney Droban skillfully weaves us a tight little story of murder for hire.By researching thousands of e-mails and recordings and putting all the pieces together Droban writes like a novelist, building the story for us from ground zero, taking us through the ins and outs of the lives of Tucson socialites Gary Triano and his wife Pamela Phillips until the cold divorce and its fateful trappings.Pam a successful real estate agent herself [...]

I love true crime books where the woman is an evil, money-grubbing black widow, so I was a little disappointed that so much of the story focused more on her 'hired hand' and their money disputes and less on the scorned socialite in question. Honestly, I felt like I trudged through it to get to the endwhich wasn't really the end, because some parts of the case hadn't gone to trial yet. Kinda disappointing because it could have been a really interesting read.

I had heard stories about a car bomb killing a guy in La Paloma. Last week the story was on Dateline. Loving true crime stories and living in Tucson, I was hoping for a detailed book on the case. Unfortunately, this author is no Ann Rule. The book was all over the place and she failed to develop each major person involved. Don't waste your time.

I like true crime and I enjoyed this book. The story had the information I was looking for, however, I was hoping for more interesting facts. I really wanted Pam to be more interesting. The plot was good and the pace was excellent.

Not a bad account of an interesting murder; like reading the news.
