I am conflicted about this collection as a whole. There were stories I had read before in other books, usually simplified for much younger readers. I enjoyed reading the original translations, but on the whole these are not great stories. I've read a lot of fairy tales over the years, and these were by far the worst collection I've had the displeasure of trudging through. The stories were neither fun nor clever, and I ended up bored more than not. There was a lot more Christianity involved in the [...]

3,5-4 stars! There is an array of various fairy tales by H.C Andersen in this collection, and some are classics I know by heart. As for The Little Mermaid however - it was my first time reading the original and damn it is bleak compared to the Disney version we all know and love. Still enjoyed it nonetheless but my favorite fairy tale in this book was The Snow Queen!

Beautiful book with some very classic stories.

DANISH PASTRY FOR THE YOUNG AT HEARTOver the decades I have enjoyed many HCA fairy tales--considering them a gift to childlike hearts the world over. Many excellent illustrators have chosen individual stories to depict, thus capturing the imagination of readers of all ages. Still I must admit to being disappointed by this Harper anthology which is not all inclusive. The tales vary in length from rather long to absurdly short--not that length alone proves a valid yardstick for enjoyment.Despite t [...]

I found that these stories improved as they went on. From the beginning, I was surprised: I have grown up with fairy tales which encourage people to be good, but many of the stories seemed to say that the best way to get what you want was to be sly, cunnin, greedy and manipulative, and to lie. And as stories, they were rather bizarre. However, I absolutely loved The Snow Queen and The Red Shoes, and it was nice to read the originals of childhood classics like The Little Mermaid, The Ugly Ducklin [...]

This book was very difficult to rate, as some stories deserved 5 stars (Five Peas from the Same Pod, The Little Mermaid, The Little Match Girl) while others deserved only 1-2 stars. My opinion of Hans Christian Andersen also ranged from brilliant to cracked.SoBut overall, I think that I would get this book for my kids/godchildren. We would just perhaps read our favorite stories and skip some of the other ones.

this book is a slightly strange version of the diseny in which the princess ends up happy whereas in this one the are alot of bald sisters and knmives its an ok book but i read it when i was very little and i definately preferred the simple diseny version even though tjhis was the original.

Some of the stories are better than others, but it was fun to go back and re-read these classic fairy tales.
