Perfect read for teensThis is a lovely uplifting book about a troubled girl and a troublesome horse who find love and trust in each other. The ranch setting is appealing and provides a great contrast for the dark, internal and external conflicts which drive the story. In ‘A Horse Called Trouble’, Ms Volnek explores the sensitive issues in childhood and adolescence of ‘the haves’ and ‘have nots’, of friendships and jealousies, of rejection and bullying, and shows us a strong central c [...]

A Horse Called TroubleA throwaway kid. A throwaway horse. Neither deserving of the title, but both thrown into the misnomer against their wills.Tara is unwanted by her mother, deserted by her father, and the victim of a cruel plan to ruin her life. Trouble is a horse, tortured by a spoiled, self-centered girl—the same one who is out to destroy Tara’s future. Nothing is ever said as to why this girl has such hatred to both Tara and the horse; in the end, it doesn’t really matter. But when Tr [...]

I picked up A Horse Called Trouble by C.K. Volnek ages ago from . You see I can be sucker for horse novels and the title of the novel intrigued me. As an Arabian, my horse can be trouble some days for seemingly no reason at all.A Horse Called Trouble is a middle grade novel. Reading it as an adult, the plot direction seemed obvious and characters are caricatures. But when I stepped back and thought about how I felt in middle school and high school, this book has quite a bit of depth. We have all [...]

A horse. A girl. Both considered troublemakers. Both misunderstood. Both looking for someone to care. I love horses. We used to own a few. Their personalities, like humans, are quite different. I love children. We raised a few of those. Put the children and the horses together and you have a story of friendship and love and sometimes conflict. In Author C. K. Volnek’s tween novel, A HORSE CALLED TROUBLE, foster kid Tara Cummings is being punished for something she didn’t even do by having to [...]

4 1/2 Stars! For me this book started out as a 4 then ended up a 4 1/2 because I really enjoyed it so much more than I thought I would. When I was young I liked horses, but was not really gaga over them like some young girls are. BUT this book is not just a story about horses or a ranch. It is about troubled teens - one particular girl named Tara. You learn all about Tara's life, her history, through "flashbacks" (which are done very well). Tara had a pretty crappy life, which is reflected in he [...]

When I first looked at this book I thought it would be all about horses and young girls who rode in competitions, then I read the blurb and thought I'd give it a try. I am so glad I did. Trouble is the right word for both the girl and the horse. Tara is a foster child who believes she'll never fit in. She tries to remain in the background but this entices the bullies to tease her and get her into trouble. Then she meets Trouble the misunderstood horse. Ms Volnek made me realise how misunderstood [...]

Volnek wrote a novel that speaks to the heart of the love of horses and the hard lessons life teaches us. It's obvious Ms. Volnek has spent a lot of time with horses. Her writing lends authenticity which otherwise would be missing if it were written by someone without intimate knowledge of the subject. Her characterization of Alissa brings out the viciousness of every bully that walked the halls of a middle school. I found myself REALLY disliking her and cheering for Tara. As a teacher of middle [...]

Tara Cummings is accused of stealing, which she didn't do, but she won't speak up for herself. Social Service takes Tara from her alcoholic mother and Dad's never been around, so they send her to a foster home and an alternative education school. Life is not good until the school puts her in a horse therapy program and she meets up with Trouble. Even then her past joins her at the horse farm in the form of Alissa, the girl who accused Tara of stealing in the first place. We are given vivid descri [...]

This was a wonderful story. I could relate to the young girl at times. I also was picked on by my classmates. It is an uplifting story and I wish there were more programs like the one in this book. I highly recommend this book for everyone including horse lovers, school faculty, parents, junior high and high school kids. This sort of hazing can be found in any school and needs to be addressed!

A Horse Called Trouble by C.K. VolnekAuthor C.K. Volnek tells a heart-warming story of a troubled, misunderstood teen girl who bonds with a troubled, misunderstood horse. Ms. Volnek's knowledge and understanding of the equine species provides a strong foundation that illustrates the healing bond that can develop between animals and humans. A must read for young adults and their parents.

At this time when everyone is aware of the issue of bullying, C.K. Volnek has given us the perfect heroine to root for. We feel for Tara, or with her, the shame of feeling you're at the bottom of the social ladder. Smooth writing and interesting characters keep the reader's eyes on the page and keep us right to the end to find out if she will ever get away from her bullies.

This read like a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie. Not to say that is bad. It was heartwarming, but just okay for me. I think a young horse lover would love this book tremendously.
