Charlotte Perkins Gilman was a prominent American sociologist, novelist, writer of short stories, poetry, and nonfiction, and a lecturer for social reform She was a utopian feminist during a time when her accomplishments were exceptional for women, and she served as a role model for future generations of feminists because of her unorthodox concepts and lifestyle Her best remembered work today is her semi autobiographical short story, The Yellow Wallpaper , which she wrote after a severe bout of post partum depression. She was the daughter of Frederic B Perkins.

Charlotte Perkins Gilman was famous as a 19th century feminist author, and apparently she's taught in a lot of feminist/women's studies courses. I was vaguely interested in her most famous story, The Yellow Wallpaper, so when this collection was an Audible deal of the day, I went ahead and downloaded it.I'm glad I did. I'll get to the title story in a minute, but I found the other short stories - which were all about a woman being presented with a choice (usually in the form of a man) very reada [...]

I've seen recommendations that I read The Yellow Wallpaper from 3 different sources within the past month. So I decided to give it a try and quite liked it. I'd give the title story 4 stars. Afterward, I felt I should check out some of her other work. There is more than one collection of her short stories featuring The Yellow Wallpaper in the title. I went with the one that was available from my library's online service. I'm really not sure if this is the worst one, but I don't feel that the othe [...]

This collection of twelve short stories by the late 19th and early 20th century feminist writer Charlotte Perkins Gilman contains one amazing story and eleven mildly interesting ones, most of which engage with women's issues, particularly relating to marriage and exploring how women may live independent, healthy, and happy lives in a male-dominated world. The first story, "The Yellow Wallpaper" (1892), is the best, one of the most potent short stories I've read, a bit like an Edgar Allan Poe tal [...]

The yellow wallpaper was excellent. I think I listened to it in the same mindset as other reviewers on -- as a Lovecraftian horror rather than a commentary on 19th century mental illness care.I enjoyed many of the other stories as well. While it's not an entirely modern version of feminism, the characters were still undeniably fleshed out and independent. It was really refreshing to read stories like this in a time period I associate with strict expectations and societal reinforcement of women's [...]

In my honest opinion, The Yellow Wallpaper was okay, from there it was downhill until the Butter Story, when I was just ready for it all to be over with. This is where I have trouble with short stories. They leave me feeling naïve, I feel like there should have been an "ah ha!" moment where there was noneor was there one and I was just too foolish to understandoor am I just thinking about it too much because most likely there was nothing there to begin with, just a simple story. Thus, leaving me [...]

This audiobook is exceptional! Some of the best short stories I have come across in a long while. Kirsten Potter does an exemplary job as narrator and I will listen to this book many times to come! One of my favorites and I look forward to finding other gems of Gilman (as she wrote over 200 short stories). My favorite stories in this compilation: The Yellow WallpaperHer HousekeeperAn Offender

An aces collection of Gilman's stories and every one of them a treat.

(A review of the main story.) We know from the beginning of “The Yellow Wallpaper” that the Jane Doe narrator is unreliable. She states, “It is very seldom that mere ordinary people like John and myself secure ancestral halls for the summer.” Ordinary people cannot rent an estate for the summer. They do not have nursemaids and housekeepers. Her husband, John, is “a physician of high standing.” She is emotional distressed postpartum or has an emotional illness magnified by the birth o [...]

A fabulous collection of stories from a feminist perspective. The title story was quite creepy. Told as the journal entries of a young wife and mother spending a summer in the country, I couldn't help but feel the woman's impotent rage as her physician husband denies what today would be diagnosed as postpartum depression. Despite the separation of years, it seems that not much as changed as many new mothers still suffer in silence, believing that it is a matter of will power instead of brain che [...]

Kirsten Potter's narration of Gilman's classic short stories is perfection. If you are interested, the book is 99 cents on audible. PLEASE READ THE BOOK DESCRIPTION because I am too lazy to type up my own synopsis and the rest of my review hinges on that information. Now that we are all on the same page, you can see, can't you, why I was expecting Louisa May Alcott? Instead I got Edgar Allen Poe. No, not really. But there is a delicious streak of horror in several of the stories and I WAS NOT EX [...]

Liked "when I was a witch" best of the other stories.

The title story is by far the best of the collection, but her other stories are pretty good as well. Writing feminist literature at this time must have been unbelievably progressive, so it's interesting to read.

I just did not really grasp this short story. Having read Jane Eyre, I could see some likeness and the ability of it to be seen as a re-telling from Bertha Mason's point of view, but apart from that I can not quite grasp the point of the book's existance.

I actually used audible to read this book and I loved it. The narrator did such a good job and the story was very creepy and compelling. It made me really feel for the woman and has an amazing twist.

I was introduced to Gilman in my high school years. What a joy to find her again in audiobook. Thank you.
